Tow safely using this user-friendly vehicle to trailer LED light adapter module. This portable and durable pulse shunt module will help your vehicle 'know' a trailer is attached.

Development History

I developed the LED Tow Connect after my Father-in-law and I built new LED-equipped off-road camper trailers and discovered that our Land Rover Discovery 3 and Discovery 4 faced a few problems when hooked up. The Discovery 3 rapidly flashed the indicators and the vehicle had no "knowledge" that a trailer was connected. The Discovery 4 had no "knowledge" a trailer was attached and the Land Rover Tow Assist was not activated.

A quick search of the great sites www.aulro.com and www.disco3.co.uk revealed this was a common problem. Having worked on auto-electric projects since I was a teenager I was confident I could come up with a solution. The quick answer would be to wire a traditional light globe into each circuit but that was never going to be practical. I could have also purchased one of the other pulse shunt modules on the market but I'm a DIY kind of guy. So after a few experiments with my own vehicle the very first LED Tow Connect was made. It worked so well I made another and we promptly set off around Australia.

Each vehicle covered 14,000 kms and we drove on highways and byways from NSW to Kakadu, the Bungle Bungles, the Kimberley and the Pilbara. The modules went through a range of conditions: torrential rain, dry dusty roads, rocky tracks, muddy water crossings and many connects and disconnects.

Happily both modules performed flawlessly. When we returned I stripped down both modules and the only dust or moisture was on the outside. I put the originals aside and built two new modules with the heaviest duty materials I could find. Plastic enclosures were replaced with waterproof aluminium ones. Plastic cable glands were replaced with metal ones. Standard trailer wiring was replaced with heavy duty 4 mm 7 core cable. And heavy duty trailer connectors suitable for the 4 mm cable were sourced.

Soon a friend who also owned a Discovery 3 asked me to make one for his vehicle and camper trailer. Through word of mouth I received some more requests for Discovery 3 and 4 modules. Parts were cheapest to buy in bulk so I made a few modules, sold a few to friends of friends and I put the final 2 or 3 on eBay. The rest, as they say, is history. Through eBay I received many requests to make modules for various vehicles from a variety of manufacturers. It took months to design and test modules across all the vehicles requested and now a large range of different models of LED Tow Connect are available.
